abstract = "The city of Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte state, northeast
of Brazil, has been severely criticized for relying solely on two
modes of transport - bus and train with no interconnection between
them. Natal contains 85 daily bus lines and their planning does
not consider a spatially explicit analysis of the current and
envisaged demand. Public transportation should serve with priority
those places which show a greater concentration of inhabitants, or
at least serve the people belonging to the less wealthy social
strata, whose purchasing power does not allow them to count on
private cars for the daily displacements. This paper is committed
to investigate whether a spatial autocorrelation exists between
the bus routes and socio-economic characteristics (amount of
inhabitants and income) of the local population, based on the use
of spatial analysis techniques, such as the global and local
Moran's indices and the local indicator of spatial association,
conducted at the census tract level. The obtained results
demonstrated that, on the one hand, the supply of bus lines in
Natal is inversely correlated to the concentration of population
and, on the other hand, is directly proportional to income in
                         several tracts of the city.",
